The Family Behind Zucchini Food Market

Zucchini Food Market began in 1991, when Sukhwinder Jandu took over the fruit and vegetable stand inside a supermarket at ABC Place in Westlands. He was 23, had studied microbiology in India and had no business background, so he learned on the job. His mother took him to the market to teach him how to choose produce, and he bought the stock, filled the shelves, served customers, and opened and closed the shop himself. The stand grew into Zucchini’s own space at ABC Place, then into a juice bar, ice cream and snacks (the first crisps and yoghurt were made at home by the family), followed by cheese, dairy and a second branch at The Junction.
Started Zucchini in 1991 and still guides the business. He built it on three pillars: suppliers, customers and staff. Some of Zucchini’s staff and suppliers have been with the business from the start.
Started Tiramisu Bakery, which bakes all of Zucchini’s bread, cakes, cupcakes and loaf cakes from her own recipes and serves Zucchini’s coffee.
Joined in 2018 after university and started in fresh produce buying, which he still leads. He set up Zucchini’s online ordering and home delivery and its in-house range, The Good Stuff: fresh juices, crisps, granola, dips and salads.
